The Banded Boxer Shrimp Whats That Fish!

Coral Banded Shrimp (Steponus hispidus) is saltwater invertebrate that are native to the Red Sea, Western Atlantic Ocean, and the Indo-Pacific region. While they look like shrimps, they are actually decapod crustaceans. They live in rocky or coralline areas in shallow pools or deep crevices down to almost 100 feet. They live agoraphobic lives, as they are thought to live and stay in areas less.

Description Although it looks just like one and bears the name, the coral banded shrimp is not actually a true shrimp. Still, it's closely related to them! This species was obviously named for its banded coloration, which is red and white with hints of purple. It grows to a maximum size of around 2.5", with the male being the smaller of the pair.

All Banded Coral Shrimps are marked with the characteristic bright red and white bands on their body and pincer claws, with the legs and antennae being white, except for the S. zanzibaricus species which are red. The front pair of legs are equipped with a pair of pincers which are larger than the pincers on the second pair of legs.
